Dr. Koufman’s Expertise
Acid Reflux
This is a larger category of conditions that’s often misunderstood. It has little to do with heartburn or indigestion. Understand reflux and why PPIs are dangerous.
LPR
A type of acid reflux, LPR (laryngopharyngeal reflux) is the great masquerader of our time. It causes or complicates most respiratory diseases, possibly including COVID-19 pneumonia.
Respiratory Reflux
A type of acid reflex, Respiratory Reflux can affect a person’s breathing and cause or accelerate lung diseases like asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, pneumonia, even lung cancer.
Breathing Problems
Shortness of breath and the inability to take a deep breath are often caused by acid reflux. These problems can usually be corrected with key changes in diet and lifestyle.
Asthma
True asthma is associated with the difficulty of getting air OUT of the lungs. Trouble getting air IN is never really asthma – it’s most likely reflux (LPR).
GERD
Only 20% of patients with acid reflux have GERD – the lion’s share have LPR! Regardless, gastrointestinal specialists treat GERD terribly.
What Does Feeling Better Mean?
No more heartburn, indigestion, lump-in-throat sensation, chronic throat-clearing, and most reflux symptoms can be controlled
Normal breathing and better sleeping. Pseudo-asthma and shortness of breath can be cured and snoring and sleep apnea can be gradually reversed (cured)
No more excess mucus and symptoms commonly tied to allergy and sinuses. With reflux controlled, the mucus, congestion and sinus pressure will disappear
No more coughing. With proper diagnosis and treatment, reflux-related and neurogenic (non-pulmonary) chronic cough can be stopped, permanently.
No more pills. You can get off all those medicines, especially PPIs like Prilosec and Nexium, which have dangerous side effects and complications.

“Dr. Koufman changed our lives, providing relief that our local doctors could not. After years of PPIs and other daily prescription medications, my wife and I are now symptom and drug free. To Dr. Koufman,
this is simply good medicine. To us, it is a miracle.” ― David Duncan (Phoenix AZ)

“Dr. Koufman saved my life!  After years of multiple worsening issue and symptoms, visits to many doctors and specialists, who did not and could not properly diagnose me, I found Dr. Koufman.  She had all the answers and a clear treatment plan. She is the best there is and her knowledgeable, caring and direct style led to my recovery from Barrett’s Esophagus.
I will forever be indebted to Dr.  Koufman!” ― Lhoryn Bayer (Hitchcock TX)

“What a relief when I found Dr. Koufman. I didn’t have to go on coughing for another twenty years! She is compassionate and has a fierce determination to heal her patients, She is my hero.” ― Janet Gerhard (Rochester Hills MI)

“For 25 years I had a chronic cough. It drove me and my family crazy. And doctor after doctor did nothing except order more tests and prescribe PPIs. But everything changed when I met Dr. Jamie Koufman. She identified my issues: LPR and a vagal neuropathy. I had reflux-related and neurogenic cough! Then she gave me a comprehensive treatment plan that worked wonderfully.
Today, I am cough-free.” ― Craig Bennett (McLean VA)

“I have a rare neurologic condition that runs through my vocal cords causing pain to speak. I have seen Dr. Koufman regularly for a number of years to seek a solution to my condition. Dr. Koufman has worked continuously, treating me not only like a patient but a friend, to help solve my condition. Her work has produced significant results in decreasing my nerve pain.”
― Mark Mellana (Wilton CT)

“Dr. Koufman is the reason I am still alive today. I went to several ENTs with my throat problem and they all said they were polyps. I eventually lost my voice and could not talk. I researched the web for the best voice doctor in the U.S., and Dr. Koufman’s name kept coming up. Before I knew it I was flying from SFO to NYC. She examined me and also thought polyps, but she does biopsies and finds the cancer. My journey had begun, and she was there every step of the way. My quarterback. Ten years later I am cancer-free and leading a great life. If you are looking for the best of the best, you have found that person in Dr Koufman.”
― Perry Butler (Saint Helena CA)

“I’ve been a patient of Dr. Jamie Koufman for years. I have had GERD and Barrett’s esophagus. Prior to seeing Dr. Koufman, I had been told by physicians that the only way to control the symptoms I exhibited was through a regime of drugs. Dr. Koufman disagreed and immediately provided me with a series of lifestyle and dietary changes that successfully helped me to achieve very measurable improvement and eventually the elimination of all prescription drugs. Dr. Koufman is a consummate medical professional and a sympathetic and attentive physician. I recommend her without reservation to anyone seeking the highest
level of medical advice for reflux.” ― Tom Golodik (Closter NJ)
